WHEN MIGHT YOU WANT TO CHECK THE VALIDITY OF A MEASURE? EXAMPLE 1: You want to measure something in your sample, but you have not been able to find an existing standardised or usable instrument (questionnaire, test) to measure it with. You have therefore had to create a questionnaire but you are not sure if it is really measuring what you intend it to measure. EXAMPLE 2: You have had to make modifications to an existing standardised measure that was developed for adults, so that it can be used with your sample of children. You are not sure if your modified version of the measure will measure the same thing in children as the original version measures in adults. See also glossary term of VALIDITY. EXAMPLE 3: You have devised a coding scheme for material gathered from semi-structured interviews with 12 parents of children with epilepsy, and you want to check how valid your coding scheme is.
